Raising a male dog in today’s modern, highly populated dog world is not easy.
We expect our dogs to walk through busy parks, pass dozens of unknown dogs on narrow paths, and remain completely docile, friendly, and playful with everyone they meet. But for a male dog, especially an intact adolescent or adult, their biology is telling them a completely different story.
Many of the dogs we meet (those that are intact and neutered) are acting like ‘breeding males’; this means they often feel the need to posture, protect resources, mark their territory, and prove themselves to other dogs. When we force them into highly social environments without understanding these natural instincts, we create a recipe for stress, conflict, and reactivity.
In this deep-dive session, we are looking at the world through the eyes of our male dogs. We will explore how the Honest Hounds approach can help you bridge the gap between their needs and our modern expectations, setting them up for long-term success.
What We Will Cover:
The Biology of the Breeding Male: Understanding the true impact of testosterone, male hormones, and the immense pressure it puts on your dog’s nervous system.
Decoding Social Status: Why your dog reacts to certain dogs and not others, and how frequent dog-to-dog encounters in the modern world actually threaten their sense of status and safety.
The Expectation Trap: Unpacking the unrealistic expectations society places on male dogs, and how we expect so much in so many areas but at the same time we are often completely missing the way they are trying to communicate with us.
Setting Them Up for Success: How to use the Honest Hounds framework to take the pressure off your dog. We will look at how to advocate for them, referee their space, and show them they do not need to take on the burden of the breeding male.
Neutered VS Intact: The key differences you need to know, why neutering isn’t always the answer and some natural remedies you can use to support them.
Whether you are navigating the chaotic adolescent phase, living with an intact adult male, or dealing with dog-to-dog reactivity rooted in posturing and social status, this session will give you the clarity and tools you need to move forward.
